CCES Band/Strings FAQ
Does Band/Strings last throughout the entire school year?
Yes. When your child enrolls in Band, it is with the expectations that they are making a commitment to play that instrument throughout the entire school year. Please discuss any changes with Mrs. Graham.
How are lessons scheduled?
Lessons are scheduled during the regular school day. Students will receive two half hour lessons per week. Students do not miss any math.
What do I need to supply for my child's lessons?
Because the lessons are free, it is expected that you obtain an instrument, lesson book, and necessary supplies for your child. Supply lists can be found on this website.
How do I obtain an instrument and necessary accessories for my child?
There are many local music vendors in our area that you are able to safely rent an instrument. All instruments will be sanitized prior to rental. Rental information will be included in this website. You may purchase lesson books from these same stores, or online. PLEASE...... PLEASE.... Do not buy an instrument off the internet without consulting me first! There are some good deals, but as we all know, "if it's too good to be true, it isn't!" If you find something that you would like to consider, please email me the information and, if possible, a link to the website.
If your child is learning to play a violin, viola, or cello, they must use an instrument that is the correct size for him/her. Most beginners start on either a 1/4 or 1/2 size instruments. Tools for you to determine the correct size instrument for your child will be included with beginning of the year information. It is especially a good idea to rent a string instrument because as a student grows, you can just trade up to the next size. Super important!
What is expected of my child during lessons?
It is expected that each student attends his/her lesson on time with an instrument and a lesson book. A pencil will also be needed for lessons.
It is expected that each student practices regularly (and enough) at home to sufficiently learn the skills we work on during class. The lessons are based on all students having practiced at home enough to be able to participate during lessons.
It is also expected that each student do his/her best during lessons, and comes in with a good attitude.
What is expected of my child at home?
Home practice is vital to success on a musical instrument. Students learn skills, etc. at their lesson, practices them at home, and we review and refine the lesson material in the following lesson. Each new home assignment is based on the successful completion of the material learned the previous lesson. 10 - 15 minutes per day; 4 - 5 days per week will keep your child's skill level moving forward.
I do not, however, expect that you can easily help your child at home! I am happy to meet with you in person or Google Meet to show you how you can help your child at home, and always available to answer questions! (No such thing as a stupid question, right?!?!?!) Feel free to email me and we can set up a Google Meet if needed.
When are the concerts?
There are two main concerts per year, one in January and one in May. Dates will be announced shortly. It is a county policy that all students attend performances except for family emergencies.
Can or should my child learn a new instrument each year?
It is highly recommended that your child play the same instrument each year (with the exception of former beginning string students who choose to switch to a band instrument in fourth grade). By the second (and third) year of playing the same instrument, the repertoire increases and becomes more fun for the students, and there are more performance opportunities for students. If a student begins a new instrument the second year, he/she will still be considered a BEGINNING student, and will not be placed in lessons and ensembles with his/her peers, but rather other beginning classes.
